The Gravensteen
On the other side of the Zeeland Bridge in Zierikzee, you'll find the Gravensteen, an old prison. The Gravensteen, once the stately residence of the Count, later became a grim prison, and its past can still be felt today. As the oldest prison in Zeeland, it bears the marks of its history. Behind thick wooden doors and walls, prisoners were locked away, even the bars that allowed a glimmer of daylight were made of wood. The conditions in which the prisoners lived were extremely harsh, and their presence still seems to haunt the dim corridors and rooms. Everywhere you look, you can find their carved inscriptions in the wood, some dating back to as early as 1577! Tours are offered on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2:30 PM and 3:30 PM. Reservations can be made by email at info@stadhuismuseum.nl or by calling 0111-454464.
